Rider Certification Program
WHAT BENEFITS DOES THIS COURSE OFFER TO RIDERS?
AUDIENCE: Adults and Teens
Level 2
This eight (6) week blended learning program (one weekly horsemanship session in addition to regular weekly riding sessions) is ideal for students who wish to expand their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. It is a phased level 1 to level 5 curriculum developed to develop top equestrians for competition and horse care and management knowledge. It is a mix of theoretical and practice sessions with a series of assessments (both written and riding) that must be tested to and assessed to progress up the levels. This program develops top, well-rounded equestrians and develops riders for future collegiate equestrian programs, equestrian career paths, and creates better riders up the show ring levels of riding.
Master Groomer Certification Program
AUDIENCE: Adults and Teens
This eight (6) week blended learning program is ideal for children and adults who want a fast track on learning how to become an expert horse handler and horse show quality groom. This program will cover important horse health and care topics such as: grooming, bathing, clipping, braiding, body clipping, mane pulling, show-ready grooming tips, handling tips, bandaging, and wrapping for trailer, standing, injury, etc. warm-up techniques, cool-down techniques, hoof care- abscesses, removing loose shoes safely, hoof wrapping, wound care, colic care, giving shots and meds, teeth and floating, longing, stall set up for shows, stall set up for farm, feeding- types of food, developing a nutrition plan, hay- types, determining quality, Trailer loading basics, Packing Trailer for a show, being a groom at a local horse show to practice what learned in the course.
Students who pass this course and receive their certification are eligible for working student, volunteer, and paid positions at Meadowthorpe Farm as they come available. We will refer students who participate in this program ONLY to other horse farms and horse owners in the Memphis and Midsouth area who are looking to hire grooms, working students, vet techs, assistant trainers, exercise riders, and stable hands. We will spotlight these students looking and available for work on our website.
Farm to Flowers Program
AUDIENCE: Youth and Adults
This spring, summer, and fall organic farming and environmental education project will consist of participants working on the farm to develop our own “horse garden” Participants (kids and adults) will learn organic gardening tips for planning, developing, planting, growing, and harvesting a “horse treat garden” We will plant fruits and veggies that horses like to eat and learn more about native plants and horse nutrition. Students and parents will also plant their own lunch garden to accompany the horse treat garden. Participants will learn organic gardening basics, companion planting, pesticide free gardening tips, dealing with pests naturally, good and bad bugs, composting basics. Participants will be able to take home compost for their own gardens. We will also have compost pick-up sale days where we will sell the mulch we compost and veggies when we harvest them.
